Nebraska football landed a legacy commitment from 2024 three-star safety Caleb Benning on Friday evening. Benning made the announcement on Twitter.
Benning is the 61st overall athlete in the 2024 class, and the sixth overall player in his class from the state of Nebraska per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.
He had nine offers in total, including from the likes of Duke, Iowa, Iowa state, and Kansas. He was recruited to Nebraska by secondaries coach Evan Cooper and defensive coordinator Tony White.
Benning measures in at five-foot-10, 183 pounds. He is an extremely athletic safety, who can go up and rake up passes with ease. Benning is also not afraid to come down and make a play on the football. The safety does a good job of being able to use his instincts to make a play. Those type of instincts will work well in a 3-3-5 defense that is relentless.
What does this mean for Nebraska football?
This is a big commitment for Nebraska for the for several reasons. For one, Benning is a legacy commitment. Husker fans remember Damon Benning quite well, and it’s great to see another Benning in the fold.
Secondly, this is another commitment from the state of Nebraska. Nebraska football has eight total commitments from the state in the 2024 class. Donovan Jones and Callen Barta are the other safeties in the class. With that being said, there are rumors that Barta may be trending elsewhere. This would make sense, given Benning’s commitment.
The 2024 class ranks 25th overall nationally per the 247 sports composite rankings.
This was a big get for Nebraska football. The Huskers would have been very short-sighted to let Benning leave the state. The Huskers should be wrapping up the 2024 class. Some other additions may come down the road, but Benning was one of the last remaining key targets on the board.
