Nebraska football hosting transfer at key position of need

Nebraska football needs a cornerback and just so happens to be hosting a former top-100 transfer in Ceyair Wright this week.

There’s no question that Nebraska football feels a little uneasy about its cornerback depth and following the injury to Blye Hill, as well as the departure of Ethan Nation, it’s hard to blame them.

The depth chart at cornerback is thin. There’s no two ways about it and that’s why it’s encouraging to see the Huskers hosting a former top-100 recruit at the position this week in former USC transfer Ceyair Wright.

Wright is 6-foot-2, 180 pounds. He was an 11-game starter for the Trojans during the 2022 season but left the team during the 2023 season and entered the transfer portal. He had three pass breakups in eight games last season.

Ranking 77th overall coming out of high school, Wright ranks 188th among transfers in the 2024 class. He’s also ranked 20th among cornerbacks but there hasn’t been any movement. Until now.

Nebraska football will host Wright for an official visit starting on Thursday according to Sean Callahan of Husker Online. The former blue-chip cornerback is the third mid-week visitor who could be added to the 2024 roster.

Nebraska football is also hosting recent commitment David Hoffken, as well as Mekhi Nelson, who is now being recruited as a 2024 target for the Huskers.

What Wright would bring to Nebraska football

Wright is long and athletic and he’s an experienced college cornerback. I don’t know exactly what happened at USC but Wright runs the 100-meter dash in sub-11 seconds and has started double-digit games for USC.

If the Huskers could get Wright playing his best again, it could be similar to the Tommi Hill reclamation project. There’s no question he would upgrade the depth right away, but Wright is capable of being a full-time starter for Nebraska football, and landing someone like that in June would be huge.

Especially at cornerback where the Huskers are precariously thin.
