Nebraska football hasn’t made enough progress under Matt Rhule

Nebraska football was destroyed by Minnesota in one of the worst performances of the Matt Rhule era.

The talk all week surrounding the Nebraska football team was about head coach Matt Rhule leaving for Penn State.

Yet, Friday was a reminder that Rhule still hasn’t made enough progress at Nebraska. There are still five games left in year three, plus a bowl game, but the playoffs aren’t happening.

That dream ended on Friday night by way of a 24-6 loss to Minnesota, as a touchdown favorite on the road by the way.

The curse of Minnesota and the curse of the white uniforms — hell, the curse of Nebraska football continues after an 18-point loss on national television.

It was embarrassing in every sense of the word.

Minnesota sacked Dylan Raiola nine times as it earned a sixth straight win over the Huskers. Darius Taylor had 34 rushing yards total last week, on 14 carries, and had 71 yards on one run, a play that completely changed the game. The Minnesota offensive line opened a hole big enough to drive a truck through on that play.

Nebraska was out-rushed 186 to 47 on the ground. The Huskers had one sack on defense. They allowed numerous third-down conversions and had just 218 total yards.

Nobody played well, Dylan Raiola included.

Not that he ever had a chance. On one play in the fourth quarter, Gunnar Gottula didn’t block the EDGE, leaving him a free run to the quarterback. This was on a third down when Nebraska was down 14.

Nebraska didn’t score a touchdown. Hell, it feels like the Huskers never had a chance. They weren’t physically ready to play. P.J. Fleck’s team dominated Rhule’s.

It was shocking. Maybe it shouldn’t be.

Husker fans wanted the Rhule to Penn State speculation to stop. Just not like that.
