Nebraska football was busy recruiting over the past couple of days. They were able to land a commitment on Sunday, while getting projections for others. By and large, this was a positive sign for the rest of the 2025 recruiting class.
In other news, a former Nebraska alum won Championship Game MVP, as Adrian Martinez was able to lead the Birmingham Stallions to victory in the UFL. His career at Nebraska may have been polarizing, but there is little doubt of his talent.
Overall, it was a busy weekend for football in general. We recap that and more in our latest Huskers news roundup.
Nebraska football lands Malcolm Simpson
Nebraska football has been heating up on the recruiting trail in the past couple of days. They landed a commitment from Texas prospect Malcolm Simpson on Sunday. Simpson is a four-star defensive lineman. He is the 11th overall commitment in a class that ranks 31st overall nationally per the 247Sports rankings.
Nebraska has been faring well in the state of Texas, and that was evident on Sunday. They continue to find quality players from the state, as the coaching staff continues to make the state a priority.
We will see how Simpson develops. Nevertheless, he gives Nebraska football the defensive line prospect that they have been looking for in the 2025 class. Yes, they already have Tyson Terry. However, the program needed depth at the position for the class, and they were able to get it.
Nebraska football in good shape for Brian Tapu
Nebraska football is also in good shape for Utah offensive tackle Brian Tapu. Tapu is a six-foot-eight tackle from the West Coast.
The Huskers need a tackle in the 2025 recruiting class, and Tapu fits the mold. He is a bit raw in terms of talent. With that being said, he has all the makings to be a quality starting tackle down the road. This coaching staff knows how to develop offensive lineman. Tapu could be another player that Nebraska can really develop at a high level.
It will be interesting to see where his commitment goes. Nevertheless, it’s a good sign that Nebraska football is leading in this regard.
Huskers trending for Dawson Merritt
Nebraska football is also trending for linebacker Dawson Merritt. The linebacker has been heavily recruited by Nebraska over the last couple of days, as Alabama has been making a push as well.
New Intel suggests that Nebraska leads for Merritt. Tim Verghese of Rivals.com noted that the Huskers have been making a strong push for him. He also suggests that if he were to put in a FutureCast right now, Merritt would be a Husker.
This is certainly a good report. Nebraska football has the chance to put together a really strong linebacker class. Christian Jones could also be waiting in the wings as well, as Nebraska football looks to have a busy month of June. As it stands right now, it looks like Merritt is in good shape to be a Husker.
Adrian Martinez wins UFL championship game MVP
Former Nebraska football quarterback Adrian Martinez has been able to shine in the UFL this season. He won the league’s MVP award earlier this month. On Sunday, he was named the MVP of the conference championship game.
Martinez threw for 98 yards on 23 pass attempts. He also managed to toss a touchdown. In the meantime, the Stallions rolled by a 25-0 margin. Sunday’s performance was just another notch in the belt for Martinez, who has truly had a strong season. The quarterback has thrown for 1,750 yards, 15 touchdowns, and three interceptions on the year.
It has truly been a productive season for Martinez, and has certainly given him something to be proud of. Now, the question is whether or not his performance will be able to get him another shot in the NFL. At the very least, he has been able to unleash his game, and play at a high level. This was something he tried to do multiple times at Nebraska, but just couldn’t put it all together. Now, he is putting it together in a major way.
