There were plenty of sights and sounds from the first Nebraska football practice of the season on Monday. One of the highlights that may have gone a little bit more unnoticed was an absolute major kick from freshman Tristan Alvano.
The Nebraska native landed a field goal from 50 yards out with plenty of room to spare. This was certainly an impressive feat, given that the freshman may have a chance to start when the season begins.
Long kicks are nothing new for Alvano. After all, he tallied the 45-yard game-winning field goal in the state championship against Gretna in November. He had one heck of a game, making three extra points and five field goals on the evening. Four of those field goals were from at least 40 yards out, including a 50-yard field goal.
Needless to say, there could be a very real kicking competition on the roster. Currently, Nebraska football has Alvano and Timmy Bleekrode at the kicking position.
Bleekrode was no slouch last year, as he was able to help Nebraska football make the most of their chances in the kicking game. He went nine-of-12 on field goals for the season, and went 34-of-35 on extra points.
His best game statistically came in the loss against Purdue on October 15. He made three field goals and all four of his extra points. Tallying 13 points in total, he was a major reason why Nebraska football was able to stay in the game, despite a 43-37 loss.
Nevertheless, it appears that Alvano has the chops to at least bring depth to the kicking room. Seeing him make kicks like the one he made on Monday reassures many that the special teams unit is in good hands for the foreseeable future. The fact that he is a local kid will make his journey even more fun to follow.
