After a four-game winning streak, Nebraska basketball was removed from the bubble in the latest ESPN bracketology.
Over the last four games, the Nebraska baskeball team has flipped a switch. The Huskers have won four straight games and according to ESPN bracketology, they have played themselves off the bubble.
That’s what four straight wins by 15-plus points will do for you. The latest victim was Minnesota, a team that entered the game 17-9 and 8-8 in the Big Ten. Nebraska won the game by 18 and they have moved up to No. 34 in the Kenpom rankings.
John Beilein was so impressed with Nebraska basketball that he said the Huskers reminded him of his 2018 national championship runner-up team at Michigan.
Every national title team in the Kenpom era has had a top-25 defense and a top-40 offense. Nebraska is ranked 39th in adjusted offense and 33rd in adjusted defense. If they can get that defensive number down further, which they will if they keep defending as they have the past four games, and this team will be one to watch in March Madness.
The goal has gone from making an NCAA tournament to winning a game or two. Joe Lunardi has the Huskers as a No. 9 seed. They also aren’t among the last four first-round byes, meaning they are off the ESPN bubble — for now.
Nebraska still can’t afford to lose their last four games (three in the regular season, and the Big Ten tournament), but it’s hard to see that happening because as Minnesota head coach Ben Johnson said, this Huskers team is playing “possessed.”
Nebraska women’s basketball projected as a No. 8 seed in bracketology
The Nebraska women’s basketball team is also solidly in the NCAA tournament field. The Huskers are 19-9 overall and 11-6 in Big Ten play. There is one game remaining for the Huskers and if they win or Michigan State loses, they will clinch a double-bye.
In bracketology, Nebraska women’s basketball is a No. 8. Both teams are projected to square off against Mississippi State.
The regular-season finale is Sunday for Nebraska women’s basketball against Illinois. The Big Ten tournament starts next week.
