Nebraska baseball pulls off a miracle to keep season alive

The season was over for the Nebraska baseball team on Tuesday, until it wasn’t after a wild come-from-behind win.

When the ball left the bat of Josua Overbeek in the bottom of the ninth inning, it sounded good, but it was headed right for the glove of a Michigan State outfielder, with a clear play to end the Nebraska baseball season.

However, in a twist of good fortune, Michigan State dropped the ball, allowing the tying run to score. The game went into extra innings, tied still at 4-4, after Nebraska baseball stranded the winning run at third.

But after three stellar defensive plays, Nebraska went to the bottom of the 10th win a chance to win the game.

Robby Bolin, who singled and eventually scored in the ninth to tie the game, delivered once again for Nebraska baseball.

Dylan Carey got on base with a single, then stole second. Bolin drove him in, and the Huskers celebrated a 5-4 win that effectively keeps their season alive in the Big Ten baseball tournament.

Had Nebraska baseball lost, they would have had an 0-1 record in pool play. The team with the higher seed advances in the case of a tiebreaker. So if Oregon beat Michigan State, even if the Huskers beat the Ducks on Friday, the teams would each be 1-1, so Oregon, the No. 1 seed would advance.

Now, things get more interesting. Nebraska baseball will advance to the semifinals with a win over Oregon on Friday at 6 PM CST.

If they win, the chance of repeating as Big Ten champion gets real.

Ty Horn, the starting pitcher, only lasted two innings after allowing three runs. Luke Broderick got the win after 3.1 innings pitched with just two hits allowed (zero runs). He struck out two.

Cayden Brumbaugh had three hits to lead the Huskers, along with Case Sanderson, who also tacked on two RBI in the win.

Nebraska is now 28-26 on the season.
