Matt Rhule ‘there is blueprint to win at Nebraska’ thanks to Tom Osborne

Every person who knows anything about Nebraska football knows that Tom Osborne is a legend. But according to Matt Rhule, Osborne still has the “blueprint” for success at Nebraska.

Rhule, who was fired from the Carolina Panthers, before taking the job at Nebraska, has also found success at Temple and Baylor. He’s won big at other programs, but he talked at a coaches clinic on Saturday, about how much he’s learned from the Nebraska football legend.

“How arrogant would it be for me to come to the University of Nebraska, sit down with Tom Osborne and Frank Solich — have them tell me how they won national championships and say thank you, I’m going to do it the way I. did it in the NFL.

“I gotta do it my way. I can’t paint the colors in the bathroom the same that they did. But there’s a blueprint to win at Nebraska and the blueprint is reps,” Rhule said. “The blueprint was four stations going on at all times.”

Rhule said he was thinking about how they could accommodate that. In the end, it was simple math. The Huskers started running three drills at once. Nebraska football implemented that in training camp last fall. They used the same formula in the spring, which seemed to be key to the development of all three quarterbacks.

“Instead of guys standing around and watching, which is what they do their whole lives now anyway, they are getting reps and they’re playing football. And what I found is when they play more football, they like more football. And instead of saying coach isn’t giving me a chance, they are getting a chance and are developing by doing. That’s a fundamental change for me and I have already seen the benefit of that in a short amount of time.”
