Matt Rhule on Penn State opening: ‘I love it here (at Nebraska)’

Nebraska football is coming off a huge win over Maryland on Saturday. Yet, that has been the last topic of conversation.

The only thing, it seems, on the mind of Nebraska football fans is whether or not Matt Rhule will be leaving to take the job at Penn State.

It’s been a topic of conversation for weeks. You could see the firing of James Franklin coming, especially after the loss to UCLA. The loss to Northwestern was the final straw.

On Monday, during his weekly press conference, Rhule was asked about the Penn State opening. Here’s what he said.

“I love Penn State. It’s my alma mater. I love Pat Kraft. I came here for two reasons. I love the community here; I wanted to live here. I love it here. I wanted to rebuild Nebraska football. This place is elite. I absolutely love it here.”

Rhule also said he didn’t want to comment on job openings at other places. It was a full-throated denial, or an assurance that he’s staying. I was holding out hope for something like that.

However, I have always thought Rhule leaving after three seasons was a long shot. Nebraska football is 5-1. The program is finally trending in the right direction. It’s hard to see Rhule abandoning that. Personally, I don’t see it happening, although you can never say never in college football.
