It’s all the rage right now to compare Nebraska football quarterback Dylan Raiola to current Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes.
After all, the two have trained together. Mahomes even refers to Raiola as his “little cuzzo” and has shouted him out on social media, as he did after his first game for the Huskers with two touchdown passes against UTEP.
The comparisons started to kick in when Raiola showed up for fall camp resembling Mahomes. The haircut is similar even though Dylan Raiola has said he’s sported the same haircut for a long time.
At any rate, fans weren’t the first ones to compare Raiola to Mahomes. In fact, that’s the exact comparison Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule made when he first scouted Raiola after becoming head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
“And not just the facial, and the mannerisms. His arm, his ability to make throws off platform, just everything. That was my first instinct. So now it’s kind of funny, to see everyone— I can’t look at Instagram without seeing someone putting them side by side. But the great thing is he’s a winner, just like Patrick is.”
So far, the comparisons have worked on the field too. Raiola is completing 73 percent of his passes for Nebraska football, which is 3-0, and has five touchdown passes compared to just one interception. However, on Friday, he’ll face his toughest test against a ranked Illinois team with a ball-hawking secondary.
Nebraska Cornhuskers volleyball with a top-5 showdown Wednesday
Speaking of tough tests, the Nebraska Cornhuskers volleyball team is in line for a couple this week as two top-5 matchups await, starting tonight against No. 2 Stanford (7-0) inside the BOB.
Nebraska volleyball beat Stanford on the road last season in four sets. That win eventually helped propel the Huskers to the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament along with the Big Ten title and win over Wisconsin.
This season, the Cardinal are elite again. They haven’t lost a match and have beaten four ranked teams already including a sweep over Texas. Their offense will test the Nebraska volleyball defense as the Cardinal are hitting .313 as a team (4th in the NCAA). Jordyn Harvey, one of the best servers in the country, will also test the Huskers’ serve-receive. She has 20 total aces and averages 0.77 per set.
Yet, Nebraska volleyball boasts an elite defense, allowing opponents to hit just .171 this season. Nebraska is also hitting .303 and in a good sign, Merritt Beason has hit over .300 in three consecutive matches.
The fifth-ranked Huskers will host second-ranked Stanford tonight at 7 PM CST. The match will be shown on the Big Ten Network. Nebraska volleyball will also face fourth-ranked Louisville on the road on Sunday.
