Nebraska football has a huge game against Wisconsin on Saturday but on Wednesday, more off-the-field issues came to the forefront as Malachi Coleman, the top-ranked signee from the state of Nebraska in the 2023 class and top-ranked signee in Nebraska’s entire 2023 recruiting class has left the team.
Coleman intends to enter the transfer portal and is no longer with the team according to a report from the Platinum Board. This comes after Matt Rhule said earlier this season that Coleman was going to redshirt.
The 6-foot-5 wide receiver did make an appearance on the Nebraska football depth chart leading up to the Wisconsin game but he was still third. His departure hasn’t been confirmed by any other outlets at this point. But Sean Callahan of Husker Online did essentially confirm it, saying in a message board post “all signs are pointing in that direction.”
However, Coleman will need to make his own announcement as Nebraska doesn’t confirm players entering the portal and he’s not officially in the portal yet, because it hasn’t opened. His name is still listed on the Nebraska football roster but after being stuck on the bench the entire season, after catching a touchdown a year ago, it wouldn’t be shocking.
If Coleman does leave, it will be disappointing. He’s one of the most talented recruits to join the Cornhuskers in years and if the staff gets basically nothing out of him. That’s on them.
Coleman had eight catches for 139 yards last season and one touchdown, which came in the win over Northwestern at a key spot in the game on a pass from Heinrich Haarberg. Coleman has played in one game (Rutgers) for the Huskers in 2024.
Brutal news for Natalie Potts
The Nebraska Cornhuskers women’s basketball team suffered a huge blow on Tuesday as Natalie Potts suffered what appeared to be a major knee injury. The Big Ten Freshman of the Year confirmed that she tore the ACL in a post on X and will be out for the rest of the season.
Nebraska Cornhuskers crush Iowa in volleyball again
The Nebraska volleyball team won its 24th straight match on Wednesday night thanks to a 3-0 sweep of Iowa by the scores of 25-9, 25-16, 25-17.
Second-ranked Nebraska volleyball continues to own the Hawkeyes with a .472 hitting percentage which was the Cornhuskers’ best since the 2017 season. Iowa was held to .082.
Harper Murray led the way for Nebraska with 11 kills and seven digs. Taylor Landfair and Merritt Beason each had seven kills and three blocks, while Rebekah Allick had six kills and five blocks. Andi Jackson was also super efficient with seven kills on eight swings.
The Huskers got 41 assists, eight digs, three kills, three blocks, and two aces from Bergen Reilly in another impressive outing for the best setter in college volleyball. Lexi Rodriguez did her part with 11 digs.
Nebraska (27-1, 17-0) will host Wisconsin on Saturday at 7 PM CST in a critical match in the Big Ten race at the BOB. The Badgers are 15-2. Penn State is 15-1. Nebraska plays at Penn State next Friday, so if the Huskers win the next two games or even just split, they should be Big Ten champs, outright.
