It sounds like DeShon Singleton is making a push to start for Nebraska football and has taken a huge leap this fall.

DeShon Singleton didn’t make a huge impact in his first season playing for Nebraska football in 2022, but that sounds like it will change in 2023.

The buzz about Singleton has been building throughout the fall and Matt Rhule added it on Tuesday night in his appearance on “Sports Nightly.” Responding to a fan question, here’s what the Nebraska football head coach said about Singleton:

“You talk about a guy that has really — I mean really — made a jump.”

Singleton being on the two-deep wouldn’t have surprised me at the start of fall camp, but he felt like a guy who was on the fringe in terms of starting. He did play in all 12 games last season as a special teamer in 2022, which is likely something he’ll do this season as well.

Will Singleton start for Nebraska?

The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder was ranked as the No. 4 safety among JUCOs in the 2022 class. He did see action in six games last season for Nebraska football, but he’s going to make a much bigger impact this season — of that, I’m sure, especially after Rhule’s comments.

Honestly, Singleton is probably going to start or have a good chance, at least until Marques Buford returns. While some key names returned to practice on Tuesday, Buford wasn’t one of them.

That should leave Isaac Gifford starting at rover, plus two openings with Myles Farmer having transferred. It feels like Omar Brown is going to be one starter and Singleton could be the other.

Corey Collier, the Florida transfer, is another name you’d think would be in the mix. Or, Nebraska could shift Malcolm Hartzog to safety. He’s played all over this fall.

Regardless of who starts, Singleton deserves some snaps on defense this fall. If he’s really made the leap as Rhule said, it would be interesting to see what that looks like, and next Thursday against Minnesota, we’ll find out.
