It was reported on Sunday night by Sean Callahan of Husker Online that Nebraska football was targeting North Dakota State running back transfer CharMar Brown.
The former Creighton Prep standout rushed for nearly 1,200 last season as a redshirt freshman and was named the FCS Freshman of the Year as the Bison won the national championship.
Nebraska football has Emmett Johnson penciled in as the starter. Kwinten Ives is the clear No. 2 according to the coaching staff. However, you always have to look at upgrading the roster whenever the chance presents itself.
Brown is 5-foot-11, 218 pounds. He would add some proven production to a backfield that is sorely lacking that outside of Johnson.
However, the optimism about Nebraska’s ability to land Brown seems to be fading. Mike Schaefer of Huskers 247 reported earlier this week that the Huskers interest is tepid, writing that “Nebraska isn’t exactly throwing itself at Brown.”
Other programs seem more desperate to add CharMar Brown
The former in-state recruit from the 2023 class has already visited Miami (on Monday). The Hurricanes have two of their top three backs returning from last season, but are seeking another.
Cal is another team in the mix. The Golden Bears just lost four running back to the portal, so Brown would be the guy, but Nebraska has to be a more attractive situation than that, regardless of any potential NIL money.
Kansas State is another program that bears watching. Matt Rhule isn’t the type to engage in bidding wars, although Nebraska did outbid teams for Rocco Spindler, but offensive line is probably viewed as having a much higher positional value, especially a starter over a potential RB2.
Brown would be an upgrade. But the staff believes in Ives, maybe enough that it’s willing to risk passing on Brown to see what Ives, another back from the 2023 class can do.
Nebraska essentially took Ives over Brown back in 2023. It looks like the Huskers will make the same choice in 2025.
