Nebraska football has been one of the most active programs in terms of adding talent from the transfer portal and it continued on Sunday with the commitment of former Southern Illinois cornerback Jamir Conn.
Conn was committed to James Madison. However, Jamar Mozee coached the kid in high school and that connection paid off. Conn is 6-foot, 180 pounds with two years of eligibility remaining. He was also productive last season with 59 tackles and six pass breakups as well as a history of playing on special teams.
Here are some thoughts on the 14th commitment for Nebraska football during this transfer portal cycle.
Nebraska football didn’t feel good about its secondary
It’s hard not to have that takeaway. The Huskers have added three players to the secondary now. Justyn Rhett is one who has a chance to become a starter at some point at safety. But Conn and Andrew Marshall, who is coming from Idaho, will be expected to play right away next season.
Donovan Jones, Larry Tarver, and Amare Sanders should be in the mix next season. Jones played well after starting the Pinstripe Bowl. Ceyair Wright is also expected to be back but these additions could signal a full-time move to safety for Malcolm Hartzog.
Hartzog has played a lot of slot corner, but he was poor in coverage last season and might be better playing in the middle of the field at safety, especially after the graduation of DeShon Singleton and Isaac Gifford.
At a minimum, Nebraska football should have Conn, Wright, Blye Hill, Jones, and Marshall, plus some of the younger cornerbacks mentioned. That’s a solid depth chart and one that should have a better chance to stand up against the pass offenses of the Big Ten.
