Trev Alberts comments on leaving; Nebraska a finalist for in-state target

It has been a surreal couple of days for fans of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, thanks to the shocking departure of athletic director Trev Alberts, who was critical in the hiring of Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule.

The Nebraska basketball team is getting set for the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals tonight, while the women’s team and wrestling squads are prepping for national tournaments. The timing is terrible, but so is the look for Nebraska athletics.

Trev Alberts made Nebraska look like a stepping-stone job. My sincere hope is that Matt Rhule doesn’t view Nebraska football that way and following his response to Alberts’ departure, I don’t believe he does.

Alberts did an interview with Sam McKewon of the Omaha World-Herald, and Trev addressed the lack of a president, which was clearly a big reason behind his departure.

“I’m not going to say anything bad about my alma mater,” Alberts said. “I love Nebraska but I think it’s fairly obvious there are some challenges. I think the layperson can probably figure that out. I think some of the challenges are reflective of where we are as a society as far as divisive things that are part of our everyday culture. It is what it is.”

It’s still hard to fathom leaving a program you “love” so much because of political infighting. At any rate, Nebraska has a new interim AD, Dennis LeBlanc, a hire Alberts endorsed in a post on X.

Nebraska football cracks top-10 for Chase Loftin

In some key news for the Nebraska football team, Chase Loftin, one of the top-ranked recruits in the state of Nebraska for the 2025 class, released a top 10 that included the Cornhuskers Thursday.

The 6-foot-6, 215-pound tight end from Omaha who is ranked as a four-star prospect by the 247 Sports composite rankings for the 2025 class (376 overall), also included Florida, Penn State, Kansas State, Miami, Missouri, Florida State, Oklahoma, Auburn, and Texas A&M among his finalists.

Loftin has visited Nebraska football seven times during his recruitment. Yet, he visited several top programs this spring such as Alabama, USC, Florida State, A&M, Miami, Oklahoma, and Kansas State. Interestingly, Alabama and USC didn’t make the cut after he took spring trips, but that’s probably good news for Nebraska.

The Huskers are the favorite according to the On3 prediction machine and have a 40-percent chance to win his commitment. There are no crystal ball projections at this time.
