Husker Big Red Daily: Nebraska gets good injury news, volleyball takeaways, blue-chip visitors

Nebraska football doesn’t necessarily need linebacker Owen Chambliss to return from injury this week, but the former First-Team All-Mountain West linebacker will do just that.

After missing the season opener against Ohio, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported on Thursday that Chambliss is expected to make his Nebraska football Saturday night against Bowling Green.

This is huge news for the Huskers. For one, the presence of Chambliss, who has played in the defense and knows it well, should help eliminate errors like the blown coverage we saw last week that led to a 68-yard play on the opening snap of the game.

Secondly, Chambliss is an impact player. He had four sacks, an interception, five pass breakups, a fumble recovery, and 9.5 tackles for loss last season, on top of 110 tackles. Chambliss can pressure the quarterback, cover, and help eliminate some of the QB runs we saw last week.

In short, Chambliss will be a game-changer in the middle of the defense, and getting his feet wet before Big Ten play is a smart move. Everyone on the defense will be better with him on the field.

Nebraska volleyball dominates home opener

The Huskers were back at the BOB on Thursday night. However, they made quick work of the New Mexico Lobos, notching a three-set sweep (25-12, 25-13 and 25-15). Here are three quick takes from the Huskers dominating win.

Elite on both ends: Nebraska hit .346 on the night, while holding New Mexico to .041. That’s an impressive difference, one that is reflected in the score. The Huskers had the No. 1 hitting percentage last season in college volleyball as well as the No. 1 hitting percentage defense. Their level of play hasn’t dropped off in that regard.

Young Huskers keep killing it: Teraya Sigler and Manaia Ogbechie have stepped into their roles this season seamlessly, turning into some of their most effective hitters. Ogbechie has been stellar on the block. Both players finished the match with nine kills. Ogbechie hit .538 on her way to nine kills. She also had a team-high five blocks.

Still perfect: The Huskers have played 19 sets so far this season, in the regular season and the exhibition matches at Texas Stadium (Spikes Under The Lights) and have yet to lose a set. Nebraska has been even more dominant than they were last season. That doesn’t mean much through five matches, but the Huskers are playing at a really high level.

Nebraska football hosting QBs, blue-chip prospects

The QB board is taking shape for Nebraska in the 2028 recruiting class and beyond.

Kai Storer is a 2028 QB taking a visit this week, according to Bryan Munson of Husker Online. He’s not ranked by Rivals or 247 Sports, at least as far as I could find. He was offered by UConn in July. He’s one of two 2028 quarterbacks expected to be on campus along with three-star Owen Herrick. 

Ranked No. 419 out of Pittsburgh in the 2028 class, it feels like Herrick could be the priority in the class. The Huskers need a commitment there sooner rather than later, at least in an ideal world. Making a strong push for the 6-foot-2, 185 pound quarterback makes sense.

2029 QB Lord Malik Heru will be visiting, too. He’s one of the to arms in the 2029 class at 6-foot-1, 200 pounds out of Chesapeake, Virginia. He’s got 15 power-4 offers. Nebraska football getting him on campus is huge, and could allow Matt Rhule’s program to establish an early lead.

The Huskers will also have 2030 QB Carter Cupito, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound QB out of Minneapolis, on campus for a visit. He’s a freshman but passed for 1,600 yards and 12 touchdowns last season. He also had over 400 yards in his season opener.

The No. 3 IOL Grayson Williams will also visit, according to Munson.
