Nebraska football revealed new uniforms on Saturday night. As expected, a certain segment of the Husker fanbase was up in arms over the new jersey/pant combination.

It was predictable. Nebraska football could sign a slew of five-star recruits, and some fans would still roll their eyes. It’s understandable. The last 20 years have been insufferable. Nebraska hasn’t won a conference championship since 1999. The Huskers last contended for the national title in 2001 or beat a ranked team in a decade.

It’s been a long time wandering through the wilderness.

Is Matt Rhule the man to lead Nebraska out of the darkness? I don’t know yet. I think so. Personally, the head coach still has my belief, just like he’s got the belief of Trae Taylor and many other 2027 recruits.

Fans will say that doesn’t matter, while acting like a jersey combination does.

Here’s the thing: jerseys only look cool when you win.

If the Huskers win 10 games next season, guess what, the attitude about those uniforms will change quickly. That’s just the way it works. Michigan’s winged helmet or Notre Dame’s golden dome wouldn’t be as cool without all the wins to back up the lore. Nebraska’s N is the same thing.

It’s iconic. You know what isn’t, the Illinois I?

Winning is the only thing that matters

That has nothing to do with the design or the color scheme. It’s because Illinois has never won anything meaningful in football, basically ever.

It didn’t seem like there needed to be a change. Honestly, the old uniform was better. But I’m not the one wearing it, and frankly, I don’t care. Why? It has nothing to do with winning.

This decision will not have any impact on any game moving forward. Matt Rhule won’t be a success or failure based on what the team wears. It matters how they play. That hasn’t been good enough. That seems to be the thing that’s really bothering Nebraska football fans.

Some really do care about jersey changes, and that’s their prerogative. Everyone can fan how they want. I’d revolt if they dared to change the helmet, unless they put Herbie Husker on it, then I might be open to it.

The best way to make a uniform cool is to win. Like most Husker fans, even the ones mad about the change, that’s the only thing that really matters.

Win, and all will be forgiven.
