Postseason baseball is just different. Nebraska baseball experienced that on Friday.

The Huskers, on paper, should have cruised against South Dakota State, a team with a losing record from a mid-major conference. Yet, Nebraska needed some strong defensive work late in the game, as well as a gem from Carson Jasa, and home runs from Jett Buck and Dylan Carey, who went a perfect 3-for-3 in what ended up as a 4-1 win.

Jasa allowed five hits and one run in over six innings of work. He also struck out eight and surrendered just one run. It’s exactly what you want from your starting pitcher.

After Nebraska advanced to the 1-0 game, following it’s win, Ole Miss and Arizona State battled into into extra innings on Friday night. That’s not the worst thing in the world. Both teams will be a little more fatigued and maybe a little more used up in the bullpen.

It took Nebraska some time to find its footing. It wasn’t the best performance of the season, but in a tournament, all that matters is finding a way to win. Teams that advance to the Super Regional were able to win their first-round game over 90 percent of the time.

The odds are even better if Nebraska wins on Saturday night (8 PM EST). If Nebraska can win on Saturday, maybe with Ty Horn on the mound, some other team would need to beat the Huskers twice in a row in order to advance.

Good luck with that.
