Nebraska football has been looking for more reinforcements at the cornerback position and got some on Friday with the commitment of former top-100 cornerback Ceyair Wright.

Wright is a transfer. He started 11 games two years ago for the USC Trojans but left the program before the end of the 2023 season.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder, was one of the top prospects in the 2021 recruiting class, ranking in the top 100 overall. He even was in the Space Jam movie with LeBron. However, Wright didn’t reach his full potential and now that he’s committed, Nebraska could be just the place to do that.

Ceyair Wright fills a big need

Nebraska landed another cornerback in the transfer portal prior to the spring and that was Blye Hill who was in the mix to start. Now, he’s going to miss some time after an injury in the spring game. Nebraska has been trying to add a cornerback since then and even moved Jadyn Doss from wide receiver.

Then, Wright falls into their lap. It’s almost hard to believe he’s still available which makes me wonder why he left the Trojans in the first place. A fresh start can do wonders though — look at Tommi Hill.

Wright has that kind of talent and he could have that kind of turnaround. He’s an NFL-caliber cornerback and it’s pretty impressive to add someone with his upside, this late in the process.

Will he start?

Wright is going to have to earn it. But the Huskers don’t have a lot of proven cornerbacks behind Hill and Malcolm Hartzog. Blye Hill would be among that group if healthy. He started double-digit games last season in the FCS and should have a role when he returns.

Ethan Nation leaving also left the Huskers thin. Doss moving to defense will help. But Wright has played in 23 games during his career. He’s got five pass breakups and an interception. Wright has real experience and he also has proven Big Ten talent.

Another late addition

There might be a roster limit in place next season but there isn’t right now and Nebraska football is taking advantage. Wright is the fourth late addition to the 2024 roster for the Huskers in the past couple of weeks.

David Hoffken will join the defensive line. Jayln Gramstad committed as a quarterback, plus the Huskers landed Mekhi Nelson (running back) and now Wright.

It feels like all of these guys are getting NIL deals instead of scholarships. Nebraska has taken advantage of that but it’s a loophole that might not exist in the future.

But it’s good to see coach Rhule and the Huskers leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of getting better.
