Two Nebraska football players entered the transfer portal on Monday, as former walk-on kicker Nico Ottomanelli and offensive tackle Grant Seagren each announced they were entering the portal.
The transfer portal actually closed on Friday, so each player must have entered their name into the portal last week. With the 105-man roster limit coming, eventually, it doesn’t make sense to carry three kickers on the roster.
Tristan Alvano and John Hohl, who ended last season as the starting kicker, remain on the roster. Seagren, a 6-foot-6, 305-pound offensive tackle, was the bigger loss of the two.
Seagren is a redshirt sophomore who played in seven games last season. He came to Nebraka football as a tight end from Oakland, Nebraska, but has developed into a quality offensive lineman. Matt Rhule praised him earlier this spring, saying he was good enough to start someday.
Now, Seagren is in the portal, and we’ll see what kind of interest there is. Sean Callahan of Husker Online says some bigger programs will have interest.
That should be it, though, in terms of spring transfer portal departures.
Latest on Nebraska football pursuit of CharMar Brown
Nebraska football fans have been hoping that the Huskers would be able to bring CharMar Brown home to play for the Big Red next season, but on Monday, that started to look less and less likely.
It was reported by the Miami On3 site that a decision was coming Monday between Miami and Nebraska. Yet, later in the day, it was clear that Cal had made a move.
The Golden Bears lost four running backs to the transfer portal this spring, so they have a clear need. They probably have a bigger NIL offer, but also have a clear path to being a starter, something which isn’t on the table at Nebraska or Miami.
Pete Nakos of On3.com projected Brown to Cal on Monday. That’s where I would expect him to end up.
