Two positives for Nebraska football on the recruiting trail

Nebraska football just landed a five-star commitment but could flip a four-star in 2026, and could be on the verge on another pledge.

With the 2025 season right around the corner, recruiting news might actually start picking up again for Nebraska football and other programs.

August is a dead period for recruiting. However, with games come the chance for visits. That will give the Huskers a chance to create some movement, both in the 2026 and 2027 classes.

There won’t be as many gameday visitors this season as in the past. Roster limits are real, and the walk-on program isn’t a thing anymore. Getting recruits on campus for games is still one of the best selling points about Nebraska football, which will be even more true if the Huskers win this season as expected.

Much of the recruiting focus has shifted to the 2027 class. However, there are still chances to add some players, and one on the radar for a flip is four-star defensive back Tedarius Hughes, a Florida State commitment.

The 6-foot-2, 170-pound defensive back is ranked No. 328 overall in the 2026 class. He’s been committed to the Noles for over a year, but according to John Garcia of Rivals, he will take an official visit to Lincoln this fall. Miami and Colorado are also expected to get visits, but the Huskers seem to have a legitimate chance at flipping Hughes this fall.

An in-state prospect could be next to commit

Matt Erickson, a 6-foot-8, 287-pound offensive tackle from Omaha, is ranked No. 581 overall in the 2027 class, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings. He’s a three-star and ranked No. 4 in the state.

Not long ago, I predicted Erickson would be Nebraska’s next commitment. That was before Tory Pittman surprised everyone and committed early.

However, there is still reason to believe that Erickson could commit soon. Or at least at some point this fall. According to Steve Wilftong of Rivals, Erickson will visit for each game this fall.

That’s a great sign for Nebraska, and it feels like a commitment is inevitable.
