Nebraska football was busy this offseason adding players via the transfer portal, but there were some key departures too, and one that might not be talked about enough is tight end Thomas Fidone.

Fidone was a top-100 recruit coming out of high school, but injuries limited his time during his first two seasons with Nebraska football. In 2023, Fidone was finally healthy and caught 25 passes for 260 yards.

Last season, the former four-star recruit caught 36 passes for 373 yards. He caught four touchdowns in 2023 but zero last season. Fidone also didn’t play very much against Wisconsin, getting benched after an early penalty.

Nate Boerkircher was expected to take over as the top tight end but transferred to Texas A&M. Fidone could have returned and been the clear starter. However, he opted for the NFL draft. On Wednesday, at the annual NFL scouting combine, he explained his decision.

“I know the type of player that I am,” Fidone said to a question asked by Scott Dochteman. “I know the ability that I have and what I can bring to the table and what I am able to do on a football field when the ball comes my way. After talking with coaches, and family, and agents — I just knew what kind of player I am and that it was time to make the jump to the NFL.”

Getting an invite to the NFL combine is a good start. Fidone is one of four Nebraska football players to get invited, along with Ty Robinson, Tommi Hill, and Isaiah Neyor. Nash Hutmacher didn’t get an invite, which is crazy to me, but it’s a huge opportunity for Fidone.

The injuries have been well-documented. Running a good time in the 40-yard dash will certainly help his cause. Then again, returning to Nebraska football and having another productive season could have, too.
