The ideal transfer portal scenario for Nebraska football

Nebraska football has been aggressive in the transfer portal, but here’s what the ideal scenario could look like for the Huskers.

The rumor mill has been running rampant when it comes to Nebraska football and transfer portal quarterbacks. In the past week, the Huskers have met with Kyle McCord, Cameron Ward, Will Howard, Sam Leavitt, and Blake Shapen.

Nebraska football is determined to upgrade the quarterback position. But what will the final result be? Kyle McCord seems like a great fit to me.

Ward is going to be tough to land. Will Howard would be another great fit for the Huskers, especially with his ability to run as well as throw. That’s not something McCord offers.

Yet, it feels like Miami, Mississippi State, and Pittsburgh are the main rivals for Nebraska, at least at this stage, and honestly, I could see the Huskers having the edge over those programs.

McCord is trying to get to the NFL. Matt Rhule can give him some useful advice for that. Nebraska also wants to run the football and actually has a nice array of weapons.

Those weapons would be even better if the Huskers were able to land former five-star wideout Julian Fleming — also in the transfer portal from Ohio State — to go along with Kyle McCord.

The perfect transfer portal scenario for Nebraska

Fleming doesn’t have huge numbers but remember, he’s never been the No. 1 at Ohio State with all of their NFL talent. Still, Fleming, a former five-star, has 79 receptions in his career for 963 yards and seven touchdowns.

I’ve said that wide receiver is among the top needs for Nebraska in the transfer portal, so adding Fleming would be ideal. It makes even more sense if you’re adding McCord.

The two players would already have a connection, plus if you add Fleming to Malachi Coleman, Thomas Fidone, and Jaylen Lloyd — the only wideout to have three 50-yard plus touchdowns outside of Marvin Harrison Jr. in the Big Ten — you have an exciting group of pass-catchers.

Add in an offensive line that is projected to return its top six players from last season, as well as a defense returning a bunch of starters and it’s clear Matt Rhule has something to sell to a guy like McCord.

The Huskers are pursuing McCord and Fleming. I have no idea where they stand with Fleming but it’s clear they are among the early favorites with McCord, who is exactly what the Huskers need at quarterback.

McCord is a former five-star, he was an 11-game winner last season and threw 24 touchdown passes compared to just six interceptions. He would be a major upgrade and if Fleming decided to come with him, it would be a dream scenario for the Huskers.
