Just when you thought that the coaching staff of the Nebraska football team was finalized, other coaching movement has put the Huskers in jeopardy of losing an assistant coach.
When Tashard Choice left Texas for the Detroit Lions, it would have been difficult to foresee that it could lead to some staff changes for Nebraska football. However, according to Pete Nakos of On3.com, E.J. Barthel, the Nebraska running backs coach the past two seasons, is on the shortlist of candidates.
Barthel has put together an impressive resume. He was Texas offensive coordinator Kyle Flood’s player development and recruiting coordinator at Rutgers from 2013 to 2014. He has also coached at UConn, William & Mary, and Howard as a running backs coach. Barthel was also the Penn State recruiting coordinator in 2017.
It’s hard to say how worried Nebraska football should be about his departure. If he does leave though, Cornhusker fans can be confident that Matt Rhule will find a quality replacement.
Mixed bag for Nebraska baseball
The Nebraska baseball team finished off its opening foray into the 2025 schedule with a 2-2 mark. The season opened with a 10-5 loss to UC Irvine last Friday, a team now ranked in the Baseball America Top 25.
Following the tragic passing of Greg Shape, the Nebraska baseball team put together an incredible performance, knocking off sixth-ranked Vanderbilt 6-4. Gabe Swansen went 3-for-4 at the plate and matched a career-high with six RBI.
Swansen doubled twice and hit a home run in the win for the Huskers. Sophomore Ty Horn, who will be the No. 2 starter this season, stepped up and allowed three runs in four innings. Jalen Worthley picked up the win after 1.2 scoreless innings in relief.
On Sunday, Will Walsh was the driving force behind a 13-0 win over San Diego State thanks to seven scoreless innings on the mound. He also struck out six. Cayden Brumbaugh was 2-for-5 with a double, triple, and two RBI.
Yet, on Monday, Nebraska baseball closed out its Arizona swing with a 3-1 road loss to Grand Canyon. Up next is a three-game road series against Louisiana this week in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Ava Kuszak, an infielder for the Nebraska softball team, was also rewarded for her efforts this past weekend, batting .643, belting six home runs, driving in 13 runs, and scoring 10 more as she earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors.
Next up for the Nebraska Cornhuskers are games against Baylor (4:30) and UCLA (9:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
