Nebraska football has Tennessee and its fanbase up in arms after the Cornhuskers canceled a scheduled two-game home-and-away series with the Vols in 2026 and 2027.
Nebraska football will end up paying a $1 million buyout to Tennessee — half a million for each game as stipulated in the contract.
Therefore, I don’t see what all the fuss is about. Nebraska football replaced Tennessee on the schedule with home games against Northern Iowa and Bowling Green. That means an extra home game, more money, and another guaranteed win on the schedule.
Tennessee fans can complain all they want, but the SEC plays eight conference games. So Nebraska was essentially playing an extra power-4 opponent just for the hell of it. These games were scheduled before the Big Ten became an 18-league conference too.
Tennessee AD Danny White got vocal on X about it, complaining about how little time Tennessee has to schedule other opponents but the reality is that the Vols pushed these games back a decade ago, so they have nothing to complain about.
Nebraska football certainly isn’t scared of playing against Tennessee but with other SEC/Big Ten crossover games potentially becoming part of the schedule, this makes sense and it will make the program some money.
Nebraska basketball bracketology updates
Following the loss to Penn State earlier this week, Nebraska basketball is still projected to make the NCAA tournament in all 113 brackets tracked by Bracket Matrix. The Nebraska Cornhuskers seed dropped slightly and is closer to a No. 10, but that is still a good sign.
ESPN has the Huskers back among the last four teams to receive a bye. That means Nebraska basketball is the fifth-to-last team in the field. That’s a precarious position to be in with four games left. Nebraska probably needs to win at least two to feel comfortable.
Nebraska women’s basketball is still projected as a No. 10 seed following their win over Oregon this week. The Nebraska Cornhuskers are also among the last four first-round byes in the women’s projection.
Nebraska Cornhuskers diamond roundup
It was a mixed bag on Friday for the Nebraska Cornhuskers on the diamond. The softball team dropped a 3-0 decision to 11th-ranked Duke. Jordy Bahl tossed seven no-hit innings and struck out 10. She also had two hits but the Blue Devils were able to plate some runs in the extra session to get the 3-0 win.
However, the Nebraska baseball team bounced back with a 6-1 road win over Louisiana. Mason McConnaughey got his first win of the season on the bump after allowing one run on six hits. He surrendered just four hits and struck out six.
Cayden Brumbaugh went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Will Jesske also had a double and scored twice. Hogan Helligso drove in two runs and coming on in relief was Jalen Worthley who tossed two scoreless innings in the 6-1 win for the 23rd-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers.
