It was a good day for Nebraska football in more ways than one.

Not only did the Huskers crush Houston Christian by the score of 59-7, but Nebraska football had a successful day recruiting, too, with the commitment of in-state offensive tackle Matt Erickson.

Erickson announced his commitment on a visit to Nebraska. It was his second visit of the season. The 6-foot-7.5, 283-pound offensive tackle is ranked No. 434 overall in the 2027 class, according to the On3 Industry Rankings. He’s also ranked third among recruits in the state.

The offensive tackle from Omaha has long been a priority for the Huskers. He took numerous visits to campus during the 2024 season and is scheduled to visit six times this fall for games.

I actually predicted his commitment to Nebraska before Tory Pittman’s. Erickson made the Huskers wait a little bit, but it was clear where this thing was headed.

Thoughts on a key in-state commitment for Nebraska football

Erickson doesn’t have an extensive offer list. However, Kansas State, Kansas, Iowa State, Minnesota, and Toledo were among his offers. Ohio State also showed some interest and hosted him for a visit, had him on campus Week 1.

Nebraska always made the most sense, though. The Huskers need elite pass protectors for their quarterback room, and Erickson is a great place to start. He’s on the cusp of being a four-star prospect already. There’s a good chance he will develop into that. Even if he doesn’t, Erickson looks like a guy who will spend multiple seasons starting at offensive tackle for the Huskers.

Regardless of the ranking, Erickson was one of the biggest priorities in the 2027 class for Nebraska football, which already has three top-500 commitments, including a top-50 QB and five-star defensive back.
