The preseason AP poll came out on Monday and in a big shock, Nebraska football didn’t make the preseason top 25. That last part was a joke. It wasn’t a shock at all after a 5-7 season.
However, the Huskers are much closer to the top-25 than you think. They received 16 points which makes them tied for 34th in the AP poll according to the points system.
Georgia is ranked No. 1. There are also four Big Ten teams in the top 10 as Ohio State (No. 2), Oregon (No. 3), Penn State (No. 8), and Michigan (No. 9) rounded out the top 10. USC and Iowa also cracked the top 25. The Hawkeyes are 25th.
So Nebraska football will have three AP top-25 teams on the schedule to start the season. Colorado and Wisconsin are also among the teams receiving votes, which makes 5 of the 12 teams on the schedule.
One AP Poll Voter digs Nebraska football
The Huskers were voted in the preseason top 25 by two voters. That’s how you can receive points and not be ranked in the top 25.
What’s interesting is how many points Nebraska football had with two appearances in the top 25 of voters. One voter, Jon Wilner, who is syndicated nationally with a number of different news outlets, ranked Nebraska football 14th in his preseason top 25 which moved the Huskers up to a tie for 34th.
Nebraska football also got votes in the Coaches poll but had just two points and was ranked outside the top 40.
I’ve certainly been drinking the Kool-Aid and have the Huskers starting the season 7-0, but it appears that this AP voter has too, and hell, I hope he’s right because the heartache has to end.
