The Nebraska football team has revealed the initial list of players who will be honored as part of the Blackshirts defense.

It’s long been a tradition that the starting players on the defense where a black shirt in practice. It’s an honor that every Nebraska football defender strives for.

On Monday, 10 players on the current roster were given the designation: Ceyair Wright, Javin Wright, Dasan McCullough, DeShon Singleton, Marques Buford, Malcolm Hartzog, Marques Watson-Trent, Elijah Jeudy, Cameron Lenhardt, and Andrew Marshall.

Riley Van Poppel didn’t make the cut. Yet, he’s not listed as a starter on the depth chart. Others will be handed out as they are earned, but it’s interesting to see two transfers, Marshall and Watson-Trent, earn the nod.

Watson-Trent was the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year last season. He’s also a tackling machine. Marshall was the best cover corner in the Big Sky Conference last season, one of the best leagues in the FCS. He was also one of the best man-to-man coverage guys at that level, and should be stellar for Nebraska, too.

Cincinnati’s offense will provide a stiff test, especially on the ground, so the Blackshirts need to be ready to play a solid game in the season opener.

Nebraska football is aiming to flip a highly-touted pass rusher

Kamron Wilson is a 6-foot-5, 210-pound EDGE who happens to be one of my favorite players in the 2026 class. He’s from Miami, Florida, and is a Syracuse commitment.

The Huskers have hosted him for two visits, one in the spring and one in the summer. Wilson has even been projected to flip by multiple experts, but hasn’t. At least not yet.

However, Nebraska football, according to a report by Bryan Munson of Husker Online, will host Wilson for a gameday visit this fall. The three-star prospect who is ranked No. 469 overall in the 2026 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, had 17 sacks last season.

Former Husker makes NFL roster

John Bullock, the former walk-on linebacker for Nebraska football, has earned his way onto the Tampa Bay Bucs’ 53-man roster, it was reported on Monday night.

The 6-foot, 220-pound linebacker from Omaha started 23 games over the past two seasons with Nebraska. In 2024,  he had career-highs with 70 tackles, 10.0 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks, five pass breakups, and one interception.
