Nebraska football has suffered more than a few departures to the transfer portal. Now, it’s time to start making some additions.
The Huskers have hosted a slew of transfer portal targets. More visits are coming this weekend as Matt Rhule looks to add to a team that finished 6-6 and is heading to a bowl game for the first time since 2016.
Multiple starters from last season’s team have entered the portal, including one yesterday. But that’s life in college football. The transfer portal also offers an opportunity to improve and it looks like the Huskers are taking advantage, as they are now trending as the favorite for one-time five-star Williams Nwaneri.
Nebraska football trending for Wiliams Nwaneri
Steve Wiltfong and Pete Nakos of On3.com, along with Sean Callahan and Bryan Munson of Husker Online, have projected the 6-foot-7, 255-pound EDGE ranked sixth overall in the 2024 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, to join Nebraska.
Nwaneri entered the portal on Thursday and did so with a “do not contact” tag. That means he doesn’t want other teams recruiting him and that he likely knows his destination.
Jamar Mozee who is on the Nebraska football coaching staff, was his head coach in high school. He also has a former teammate on the roster (Isaiah Mozee) and visited Nebraska during the recruiting process.
It’s been years since the Huskers had a defensive lineman as talented as Nwaneri (maybe Randy Gregory). He could be a first-round pick even though he only had one sack last season for Missouri. As a high school senior, he had 23.
The talent is there. It will be up to the Huskers to get it out of him.
