Nebraska football bet big on Dylan Raiola. It worked out ok. The Huskers have to hope the next two years with Kenny Minchey will work out better.

On Sunday, after much speculation, the former Notre Dame quarterback, who signed with the Irish as the No. 170 overall prospect and the 14th-ranked quarterback in 2023 out of high school, committed to the Nebraska football program.

This was expected to happen before the tranfser portal even opened. Minchey is ranked as the No. 9 quarterback in the 247 Sports transfer portal rankings. He’s ranked No. 40 overall. So this is a big commitment, especially when you consider he’s got two years left to play.

Thoughts on Kenny Minchey to Nebraska

Beyond that, Minchey is the dual-threat quarterback Matt Rhule wants.  He ran for 84 yards on seven attempts this season. His biggest claim to fame is narrowly losing the starting quarterback job at Notre Dame to CJ Carr.

Minchey has 29 career pass attempts. He’s completed 23 of them for 212 yards. He’s carried the ball nine times for 93 yards. The potential is there, but he’s not a proven entity.

Nebraska is expected to bring on another quarterback, but it’s doubtful that’s a higher paid or higher-ranked option than Minchey.

Minchey is the big money option for Nebraska. If he works out, he can give the O-line a mobile QB to work with, but also clears a path for Trae Taylor to take over.

TJ Lateef could look to leave. Hopefully, he sticks around, but it’s hard to see him winning the job next season, or ever.

Taylor will be ready by 2028. The next two seasons should belong to Minchey, and while that’s a risky bet, with a brutal schedule next season, it’s the bet Nebraska made.
