Nebraska football is in the market for a transfer portal quarterback this offseason. One of the bigger names that was suggested for Nebraska was former Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke . His name came up in a list compiled of best fits from 247Sports Brad Crawford.

The quarterback announced he was entering the transfer portal on Monday evening.

Van Dyke threw for 2703 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in 2023. He threw for 1,844 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions in 2022.

The last two years have been a bit of a step back in comparison to his successful 2021 season. That year, he threw for 2,931 yards, 25 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He won the ACC Rookie of the Year and ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year honors that season.

Crawford indicated in his report that there is a chance Nebraska football could reach out to Van Dyke. Here’s what Crawford had to say.

Nebraska projects to go transfer portal-digging for a quarterback after coming off one of its worst statistical seasons offensively in decades under a first-year coaching staff. Turnovers were an issue at the position for play-caller Marcus Satterfield, whose unit never found its rhythm and scored just 10 points in the season finale with a chance to go bowling. Van Dyke doesn’t have any ties to the Big Ten or the Huskers, but there’s a chance Nebraska will reach out to him. Kansas State’s Will Howard might be the Huskers’ top target however, sources say.

Van Dyke undoubtedly regressed last year, and it’s hard to pinpoint the cause of his regression. There were times when he did not seem interested in playing the game, during the game. He was focused on throwing the football down the field, and made poor decisions and reads.

For what it’s worth, Miami head coach Mario Cristobal is not the best at developing quarterbacks. That could’ve played a part in it.

Whatever the case may be, it was clear at times last season that Van Dyke needed a change of scenery. A place like Lincoln could be the answer for him. He wouldn’t be my first choice as a transfer portal quarterback. However, I don’t think he would be the worst choice in the world either. When he is at his best, he can throw the football down the field and make things happen.

The quarterback would be an interesting target for Nebraska football. Van Dyke would have one season of eligibility remaining, and he would bring veteran experience to a position that needs some in Lincoln. The regression could be a bit of a concern, but Nebraska football undoubtedly needs a spark at the position.
