Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule: ‘Our defense is a star’

Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule had a clear message about his defense after they dominated Colorado on Saturday.

All week, Nebraska football fans heard about the star power of Colorado with Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders.

There’s no question, those guys are stars. They are going to be first-round picks. But football is a team game and the Buffaloes certainly didn’t have any stars on their offensive line.

Nebraska football sacked Sheduer Sanders seven times last season. This time around, the Blackshirts had six sacks and forced two takeaways. Nebraska blocked a kick and didn’t allow Colorado to get a first down until the second quarter.

The first touchdown didn’t come for Colorado until after the game was decided and it was clear from the opening kick that Nebraska was going to win this game with their defense.

Dylan Raiola helped. For the second straight game, he was efficient and avoided a turnover. Nebraska also ran the ball well and scored two rushing touchdowns.

But the night belonged to the defense. Tommi Hill’s interception returned for a touchdown was one of the most electrifying moments I can remember from a Nebraska defense in a long time.

Those things used to happen all the time. But Saturday felt like a sign that more of that was on the way.

As far as the star players of Colorado, Sanders threw one touchdown and had 244 yards passing. Travis Hunter had 10 receptions for 110 yards. They were fine.

But the star of the show was the Nebraska defense, which Matt Rhule rightly proclaimed on national television after a 28-10 win over the Buffaloes in which the Huskers allowed 16 yards rushing and just 260 total.

“Everyone was talking about their stars, Our defense is a star,” Rhule said.
