The writing has been on the wall for Nebraska football special teams coach Ed Foley. The 2024 season saw the Huskers struggle once again on special teams and the Pinstripe Bowl was the final straw.
Nebraska football nearly squandered an 18-point lead after a blocked PAT was returned for two points and a punt was blocked that essentially gave Boston College a free touchdown.
Matt Rhule said the Nebraska football special teams needed a “complete overhaul” and that process started on Saturday as Ed Foley was fired according to multiple reports (Football Scoop had it first).
Mike Ekeler, the current special teams coach at Tennessee, is one name being mentioned for the opening. A native of David City, Nebraska, Ekeler spent three seasons on the staff of Bo Pelini. If there was a home-run hire out there to replace Foley, he would have to be it.
Thomas Fidone announces he is leaving Nebraska football
After he saw limited action against Wisconsin, it felt like the 2024 season could be the last for Thomas Fidone with the Nebraska Cornhuskers. However, he played in the bowl game, but on Saturday, Fidone announced that he would be leaving Nebraska football.
It’s unclear if Fidone will enter the transfer portal or the NFL draft. There have been some rumors connecting him to Michigan, but either way, the former top-100 recruit has played his last snap in Lincoln.
The same can be said for Isaiah Neyor. The former Nebraska wideout signed with Louisville out of the transfer portal, only to have it withdrawn according to Pete Nakos of On3.com. Neyor has withdrawn his name from the transfer portal. Yet, Nakos posted on X that he’s likely headed to the NFL draft now.
