Nebraska football didn’t want to pay for Charmar Brown

Nebraska football could have landed CharMar Brown, but it wasn’t willing to pay an “exorbitant” amount of money.

It turns out that the CharMar Brown recruitment played out for Nebraska football exactly as we thought.

Nebraska was interested in Brown, the former North Dakota State running back from Omaha. Matt Rhule, in an interview Monday with Husker Online, said they saw “one player who could come in and help,” which clearly refers to CharMar Brown this spring.

Rhule didn’t mention Brown by name, but he didn’t need to.

“We didn’t see many guys,” Rhule said. “We saw one player that we thought had a chance to come in and help. Emmett (Johnson) is our RB No. 1. But as the economics started to happen, we’re not going to hurt our team by paying an exorbitant amount for someone — significantly more than the guys that they’re not starting above.

“It just doesn’t make sense.”

Rhule is saying that Nebraska would have had to pay Brown more than current starter, Emmett Johnson. That would have been wrong and surely could have upset the balance of the running back room.

Sometimes, the best moves are the ones you don’t make. Nothing against Brown, but culture matters, and it feels like that could have upset the culture.

Rhule says a punter is coming

In another tidbit, Rhule said Nebraska football will have a rugby-style punter joining the roster on June 1. He didn’t say who it was, but that’s the final roster spot to be concerned with.

The roster limit fight could really impact Nebraska football, more than most, but if the judge overseeing the House settlement agrees to the NCAA proposal, the Huskers would be allowed to grandfather in all of the players currently on their roster, if they choose.

I feel like that would be a no-brainer. It’s what I expect to happen, but at least we know that another punter is on the way.
