Nebraska football ended up making a transfer portal addition this week, but it wasn’t the one Husker fans were hoping for or expecting.
Nebraska was after former North Dakota State running back CharMar Brown this week. However, the Omaha native committed to Miami on Wednesday.
Yet, on Thursday, Nebraska football did make a move that could end up being significant as the Huskers added former Charlotte placekicker Kyle Cunanan.
Cunanan played two seasons for Charlotte before he entered the transfer portal in the winter window, committing to Cal. However, Cunanan re-entered the portal and Mike Ekeler, the new Nebraska fotoball special teams coach, made a move to add him to the roster.
We just talked about how it’s unlikely Nebraska will carry three kickers with the 105-man roster limit, although that might not impact the 2025 season.
Nebraska clearly wanted to add something to the kicker room. Here’s what Cunanan told Husker Online’s Sean Callahan about his commitment to Nebraska.
“That’s kind of one of the big things they were looking for in this process, and they saw that in me in terms of ball striking and hitting a clean enough ball that doesn’t get affected by the wind,” Cunanan said. “Being consistent in a windy environment is important.”
Over two seasons with Charlotte, Cunanan made 14-of-20 field-goal attempts with a long of 49 yards. He was 21/21 on PAT attempts and had 21 touchbacks on 51 kickoffs.
Maybe Cunanan could serve as the kickoff specialist or even the starting kicker. It might just be a three-way battle in camp, but I don’t think Nebraska football makes this move unless it sees Cunanan as a potential starter, especially since he has three seasons of eligibility left.
