Nebraska basketball

Both Nebraska basketball teams have been struggling as of late. The women’s basketball team has dropped four straight games, all by double figures, which includes the 84-67 loss to Minnesota on Thursday night.

The Huskers are 16-9 overall. They are also 5-9 in the Big Ten. The worst part is that their resume doesn’t include a quad-1 win. There will be plenty of chances to get one or two down the stretch, but Amy Williams’ team will need a signature win or two to lock up a berth.

ESPN’s latest bracket projection has Nebraska women’s basketball as a No. 9 seed. The Huskers are getting closer to the bubble but are still in a solid spot, thanks to a high NET ranking.

Nebraska basketball has dropped three of four in men’s basketball. Still, the Huskers are 21-3. They will be in the NCAA tournament. The only question is seeding. According to Bracket Matrix, which tracks all of the bracket projections, the Huskers are still projected as a No. 2 seed, according to the average of all brackets.

Nebraska is the lowest of the two seeds — the closest to being replaced — so they need to start stringing together some wins. A 5-2 finish should mean no worse than a No. 3 seed.

Nebraska baseball opening day

After winning a second consecutive Big Ten tournament title, there is excitement as the Huskers are back at it on Friday, taking on UConn on MLB Network at 7 PM CST in the season opener. Games will follow against Northeastern, Grand Canyon, and Stanford.

Ty Horn will get the ball first. He’ll be the Friday starter this season for the Huskers. Nebraska baseball also added an All-American Cooper Katskee, who transferred from Miami (OH). He was 11-2 last season with a 3.08 ERA. He will start on Sunday, while Carson Jasa, who had four stars as a true freshman last season, will be on the hill Saturday.

Offensively, Nebraska returns 49.9 percent of its runs, 52.2 percent of its hits, 52.1 percent of its doubles, 71.4 percent of its triples, 51.6 percent of its home runs, and 47.8 percent of its walks. Case Sanderson, a former third-team All-Big Ten selection, is back and is one of just 10 Nebraska baseball players to start a career with back-to-back seasons hitting .300.

Dylan Carey also returns. He’s within 10 doubles of the school record. He’s got 19 career home runs, 102 RBI, and 112 runs scored. Catcher Jeter Worthley is a name to know. He will be the first true freshman to start at catcher this century. Transfers Jett Buck (INF) and Cole Kitchens (INF) are the transfers who could have an impact in the batter’s box. They combined for 33 home runs last season.

Nebraska softball split

Nebraska softball split a pair of ranked matchups on Thursday, defeating LSU 6-0, before dropping a game to Georgia 6-5. The Huskers are 4-3 before a game against No. 3 Tennessee on Friday (11 AM CST on ESPN2).

Alexis Jensen (2-0) grabbed the win in the circle after tossing 4.0 scoreless innings with just one hit and seven strikeouts. Jordy Frahm came in to close out the game and struck out four in 3.0 innings. Offensively, Frahm went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double. (Huskers.com).
