It took another series sweep, but after three wins over Northwestern this weekend, the last coming by way of an 8-7 victory on Sunday, the Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team is finally ranked. That’s according to the Baseball America rankings. Nebraska baseball checked in at No. 22. D1 College Baseball has Nebraska at No. 24.
The Cornhuskers are 20-5 on the season and have a huge matchup against Creighton, another 20-win on Tuesday night in Omaha.
As far as the sweep of Northwestern, the weekend opened with Brett Sears improving to 5-0 as a starter. He allowed just two runs on six hits and struck out four. Will Walsh blasted a two-run homer, while Cole Evans had a hit and two RBI.
Evans opened the second game of the series with a home run. He finished with three hits and three RBI. Josh Caron stole the show though with a grand slam in the second inning as Nebraska baseball won 9-5 (Saturday). Will Walsh got the win after allowing just 2 runs in over three innings in relief of Drew Christo.
On Sunday, Evans capped a helluva weekend with a sac fly in the 10th to win the game for the Huskers, 8-7. He had two hits and two RBI. Josh Caron was also a hero, belting an RBI single in the top of the ninth to extend the game, allowing the Cornhuskers to rally for the sweep.
Nebraska is first in the Big Ten standings and 20-5 overall.
A new 2025 QB to watch for Nebraska football
According to Bryan Munson of Husker Online, 2025 quarterback Mason Drube will be on campus to visit Nebraska football on Monday during spring ball.
Drube is unranked but a rising prospect. He is from Gillette, Wyoming, and visited North Dakota State this weekend. Michigan State just offered and some other Big Ten programs are showing interest.
The 6-foot-3, 205-pound quarterback has six offers total with Michigan State, Oregon State, and Washington State being the most notable. Nebraska football hasn’t offered yet. It could be coming after the visit, but it’s interesting since four-star TJ Lateef is slated for an official visit.
Nebraska football is thought to be the favorite for Lateef, who said no one is recruiting him harder than the Cornhuskers right now. Drube is a name to watch though and if an offer goes out, you wonder where that puts him on the QB board and what it could mean for Lateef.
Nebraska softball also leads the Big Ten
The Nebraska Cornhuskers are on a roll on the softball field too, winning their first five Big Ten games. One of the Huskers’ games against Illinois was canceled due to rain, so they are 5-0. Michigan is 6-0, but still, it’s been an impressive start to Big Ten play, especially without Jordy Bahl.
Brooke Andrews was the hero for Nebraska softball on Sunday, coming up with a run-scoring double in the top of the ninth that proved to be the winning run in a 5-4 victory over Wisconsin. On Saturday, Talia Tokheim and Sydney Gray hit back-to-back homers. It was the third homer of the weekend for Tokheim. Gray also blasted a home run in the 11-7 win for the Cornhuskers over Wisconsin. All three came on the road.
The Nebraska softball team (21-13, 5-0) will host Kansas on Tuesday night. The first pitch is set for 5 p.m.
