I was wrong when I wrote on Tuesday morning that Nebraska football had seen its final players hit the transfer portal as another wave of Huskers announced their intentions on Tuesday afternoon.
The transfer portal closed last Friday, so these Nebraska football players entered their names last week. Once they have entered, it can take time for players’ names to show up in the portal.
The Huskers didn’t lose anyone notable, in the sense that no players from the two deep left the program, but defensive back Evan Taylor, tight end/D-line Ian Flynt, OL/DL David Borchers, and wide receiver Hayes Miller entered the portal according to Steve Marik of Rivals.
That’s six players total who have entered the portal this week. That number seems kind of low, considering the 105-man roster limit, but that might not be going into effect this season. Still, some can see the writing on the wall in terms of playing opportunities.
Taylor, Flynt, and offensive lineman Grant Seagren, who was offered by Washington State on Tuesday, are the biggest names. Seagren could land at a power-4 program.
Speaking of transfers, there still is no word on the commitment of CharMar Brown, although Cal is projected to land the transfer portal running back from Omaha.
Huskers get a walk-off win in baseball
Trailing 6-4 to Kansas State in the bottom of the ninth, Gabe Swansen came to the plate and delivered a walk-off double to send the Huskers home victorious with a 7-6 win.
Nebraska improved to 22-23 on the season. Dylan Carey was 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs scored. Swansen’s only hit was the game-winner. He also had three RBI. Robby Bolin managed two hits, while Case Sanderson had a hit and two runs batted in.
It was a pitching effort by committee. Gavin Blachowicz got the win eventually after retiring a couple of batters in the top of the ninth inning.
Following the win, Nebraska’s RPI moved up to No. 63. Evan Bland pointed out that last season, Indiana was selected to the NCAA baseball tournament as an at-large team with an RPI of 55.
Nebraska baseball plays the next seven games at home. There is a three-game series against Minnesota this weekend, a home game against Creighton next Tuesday, followed by a three-game set against Michigan.
Not long ago, it felt like Nebraska was just playing to reach the Big Ten tournament. Now, an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament seems possible, which isn’t something we could say a few weeks ago.
