Matt Rhule’s Nebraska football contract extension isn’t signed yet

Breaking down three keys for Nebraska football to beat USC, plus we have another update on Matt Rhule.

With all the noise surrounding Nebraska football, it’s not easy to focus on the game against USC on Saturday, although it should be the No. 1 priority for the Huskers.

That being said, it would be a positive for the entire Nebraska football program if the Matt Rhule to Penn State rumors could be put to rest. Some might think it’s too early for an extension.

Yet, Rhule has achieved clear progress. The arrow is pointing up, and this move was the only choice that Troy Dannen had, outside of risking the loss of his head coach.

Josh Peterson of Husker Max reported the deal was signed last night. Will Compton, a Nebraska great and podcaster, refuted that on Wednesday night. Compton hinted that he spoke with Rhule. He hinted that an announcement could come on Thursday.

Rhule is 18-15 in his third season as the Nebraska football head coach. He hasn’t beaten a ranked team. Rhule is also 0-2 against Iowa and Minnesota. Yet, the Huskers are bowl eligible for the second year in a row.

They also have the chance to make a push for the College Football Playoff if they can upset 23rd-ranked USC Saturday night at Lincoln Memorial Stadium.

What a weekend that would be. A Matt Rhule extension was announced on Thursday, hopefully, followed by his first top-25 win as Nebraska football head coach on Saturday.

Either way, Matt Rhule is the right man to lead this program, now and in the future.
