If you wondered why Nebraska football was playing with its hair on fire, despite having a massive lead on Saturday night, all you need to do is listen to Matt Rhule’s halftime speech. You will understand why.

Despite the Huskers leading Akron 33-0, Matt Rhule delivered a fiery speech to the Nebraska football team. He said that the way Akron was throwing the ball before the end of the first half was a sign that they didn’t respect the Huskers or their pass rush.

He said that anytime Akron passed, he wanted the quarterback hit, or he wanted another group of pass rushers in the game. That gave me goosebumps, along with his quote.

“It’s about time people say, ‘I don’t want to schedule those guys anymore. I don’t want to play those guys anymore.’ And if my standard’s too high, then leave,” Rhule said via the video that was leaked.

Rhule also made the point to say that he “didn’t care about the score.” He cared “about the tape.”

That means the Huskers aren’t just trying to win, they are trying to play their best. They are pushing to meet a new standard, and the 68-0 win certainly did that.

Nebraska football, even with backups playing for most of the second half, outscored the Zips 35-0 in the second half. Over 100 players got in the game for Nebraska, yet even when the Huskers were up 68, the team was competing as if the score was 0-0.

That’s how you achieve excellence. It’s how you build a championship football team, and Saturday, despite the opponent, felt like a true measure of progress, exactly because of that mindset.

A mindset that came directly from the head coach.
