There were rumors that Malachi Coleman had left the Nebraska football team and it was confirmed by head coach Matt Rhule on Monday that he will enter the transfer portal.

Rhule had only good things to say about Coleman, who was the No. 1 recruit in the state of Nebraska in the 2023 class and a top-100 prospect overall. He did catch eight passes for 139 yards and had a touchdown as a freshman but only played in one game this season.

However, Coleman won’t be the only Nebraska football player leaving to enter the transfer portal. The portal opens Dec. 9, which is less than two weeks after the Iowa game.

Rhule’s comments reflect a new era of college football

Rhule said “3o-50” Nebraska football players could be leaving because of roster limits. The Huskers are well over any limit, whatever it ends up being. It seems like 105 is the number which could eliminate walk-on players.

How it’s all structured remains to be seen. Nebraska will also be looking to add some talent via the transfer portal which is open until Dec. 28.

For the first time since the portal has existed, Nebraska will be playing in a bowl game, so the Huskers will need to work on both things — preparing for the bowl and next season.

That’s the world of college football. Some players will end up leaving the Nebraska football team just like in past seasons, but it should happen in greater numbers this year and that’s just a reality of the times.
