Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule said that he was “embarrassed” on Saturday following a 56-7 loss by the Cornhuskers at the hands of 16th-ranked Indiana.

The Hoosiers are a good team. There’s no doubt about it. They looked like a playoff contender as they ran all over the Huskers to the tune of five rushing touchdowns.

Quarterback Kurtis Rourke seemed to have an open guy on every play. He also had all day to throw. So much for the vaunted Nebraska football defensive line.

Whether it was offense, defense, or special teams, Nebraska football was out-classed. Rhule said that he “didn’t see this coming.”

Maybe that’s the more worrisome sign. The Nebraska head coach also said he was “embarrassed” and after that performance, it’s hard to argue.

“We had some opportunities,” Rhule said. “But, at the end of the day, just, couldn’t really tackle the back today, couldn’t stop the run. And they made a lot of big plays in the vertical passing game. Just was bad football by us. I’m not embarrassed of our players, but I’m embarrassed of the job that I did to get our team ready. I have to do a better job next week, and the weeks after.”

The Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach also apologized to fans.

“Whether you lose in overtime or you lose by the score we lost by today, it’s just a loss. It’s a bad loss. And, again, I apologize for that loss. I apologize to the people who spent their time and money to come watch that But, again, I’m not embarrassed of our guys. I’m proud of our guys. I know the work that they put in. I know the sacrifices they make — they’ll do it again this week.”

Nebraska Cornhuskers with another weekend sweep

As poorly as things went for Nebraska football, the Nebraska volleyball team stayed hot with consecutive sweeps over Michigan State on Friday and Ohio State on Saturday.

The Cornhuskers are now 18-1 on the season and 8-0 in the Big Ten. Nebraska volleyball swept Michigan State on Friday, 25-15, 25-19, 25-15, at the Breslin Center.

Taylor Landfair and Harper Murray led the Huskers with 12 kills each. Landfair hit .417, while Murray hit .333. Andi Jackson added 10 kills with five blocks and hit .600. Merritt Beason had nine kills. Rebekah Allick contributed three kills and hit .429. Bergen Reilly had 34 assists and nine digs, and Murray had eight digs while Kennedi Orr and Laney Choboy had seven.

On Saturday, Nebraska volleyball dominated again hitting .369 and holding Ohio State to just .144. Murray had 14 kills and hit .394. Beason had another solid match with 13 kills (.345). Jackson was strong again with eight kills and three blocks. Landfair also pitched in with seven kills, while Allick had four kills and five blocks. Reilly added another double-double (39 assists, 11 digs); Lexi Rodriguez managed 22 digs.

No. 2 Nebraska volleyball will host Illinois and Michigan next Friday and Saturday.

Nebraska basketball loses secret scrimmage

We will see the Nebraska men’s basketball team for the first time next Sunday in an exhibition but on Saturday, the Cornhuskers squared off against Utah in a secret scrimmage and dropped the game 75-73 in Utah.

The season opener for the Huskers is set for No. 4 against Texas Rio Grande Valley. Nebraska basketball was picked 12th in the Big Ten preseason media poll. ESPN has the Huskers as one of the “first four teams out” in its preseason bracketology projection.
