Nebraska football clearly feels that it needs reinforcements in the secondary. The Huskers are hosting a transfer portal cornerback this week and they have also switched another receiver to defensive back.

Brice Turner and Jeremiah Charles both came to Nebraska football as two-way athletes. Turner and Charles are both playing defensive back now. Charles might even work his way into the starting lineup.

But he’ll have competition from another former wide receiver as Jaidyn Doss, who played in four games last season for Nebraska, will play defensive back according to head coach Matt Rhule.

What Jaidyn Doss moving to defense means for Nebraska football

Nebraska has shown interest in multiple transfer portal cornerbacks this spring and will host former USC starter Ceyair Wright this week. Adding Wright would help, but the Huskers are worried about depth and Doss is a dude who has shown he can play cornerback before.

Rhule said that the staff viewed his change of direction skills and ball skills as reasons why his upside is better on the defensive side of the ball. With the loaded wide receiver depth chart, it will probably be easier for Doss to play his way onto the field.

Moving a redshirt freshman from wide receiver to cornerback might not have a huge impact on the Huskers next season. But it will add a reinforcement and you never know, sometimes this kind of move is exactly the kind of thing that can jumpstart a career.

I always thought Doss would help the Huskers on offense. He still could but with Jaylen Lloyd, Malachi Coleman, Jacory Barney, Isaiah McMorris, Dae’Vonn Hall, Quinn Clark, plus vets like Jahmal Banks and Isaiah Neyor, the move makes sense.

Hopefully, it pays off for Doss and the Cornhuskers.
