Is Nebraska really standing pat at running back?

Matt Rhule indicated that Nebraska football wouldn’t add another running back, but is he telling the truth?

Nebraska football

It feels like there is never a dull moment with the Nebraska football program. Whether it’s the Mike Ekeler drama, the commitments and flips, or just offseason player movement, there is plenty to discuss.

Matt Rhule made waves when he interviewed with Nebraska media on Friday. He offered some clarity on Ekeler, who definitely is leaving based on the way Rhule spoke about him.

What was more interesting to me is what Rhule said about running back. The Nebraska head coach talked about Mekhi Nelson and Isaiah Mozee — how the Huskers liked their room. He talked about how they evaluated the current roster and the players in the portal. He made it seem as though Nebraska was standing pat.

“We like the room we have,” Rhule said. He also said the program was going to make another addition or two via the transfer portal, which came after Nebraska had landed a commitment from Boston College defensive tackle Owen Stoudmire.

So is Nebraska adding another player? And could it be a running back?

Keep an eye on Charmar Brown for Nebraska football

The key that Rhule said is they are evaluating players in the portal. The solution to Nebraska’s running back issue might not be in the portal yet. Many believe that could be Charmar Brown, who is playing for Miami in the national championship game on Monday night, but flirted with the Huskers in the spring portal window.

Brown chose Miami, which offered more money. It worked out for both sides. Brown is the third back on a great team. Nebraska got an All-American season from Emmett Johnson.

You wonder if Brown, say Miami wins, would be willing to take his ring and return to Nebraska for a sweeter NIL deal and an expanded role. There wouldn’t be any doubt about RB1 in Lincoln. And for the record, Johnson went from being a nobody in terms of NFL draft boards, to a likely pick early on day three.

That’s as valuable as any NIL deal. We’ll see how it plays out, but I would be surprised if the Huskers went forward with the running back room they have.
