For the second week in a row, the Huskers took down the No. 1 team in college softball. Nebraska beat Texas last weekend, then followed it up with a 3-2 win over Texas Tech on Sunday.
It was the fifth time the Huskers have beaten a No. 1 team in softball. Two of those wins came within eight days of each other.
Alexis Jensen, the stellar freshman, got the win. She pitched four solid innings for Nebraska, allowing just two runs, before Jordy Frahm came on to close it out with three perfect innings.
The Huskers were facing the two-time national pitcher of the year, NiJaree Canady, and got her out after 4.2 innings to stick her with her first loss of the season. Jesse Farrell, the UNLV transfer, blasted a two-run home run to tie the game before Dakota Carter eventually scored on a single by Oklahoma transfer Hannah Coor.
From there, Frahm sealed the deal. Jordy also pitched a complete-game shutout as the Huskers beat UCF 6-0. She also had two home runs. Frahm currently leads Nebraska in batting average among players with at least 10 at-bats. She’s also first on the team in hits, home runs, RBI, and runs scored.
Nebraska is 6-4 overall. The Huskers also beat LSU last week 6-0, but dropped ranked matchups against Georgia (6-5) and Tennessee (4-1). South Carolina is up next on Friday.
Nebraska baseball stays perfect
Will Bolt couldn’t have asked for a better start. The Huskers are 3-0, and have gotten solid starts from all three of their starters. Ty Horn allowed one run in 4.2 innings in the season-opening win over UConn. Carson Jasa followed it up with a win on Saturday after giving up four runs on five hits in five innings of work.
As a team, opposing hitters are batting just .156 while Nebraska is hitting .386. Case Sanderson is batting .636 so far this season with seven hits and two doubles. Will Jesske hit a home run in the win on Sunday, while Dylan Carey also hit a homer and is hitting .467 so far this season.
Nebraska will aim for a 4-0 start against Stanford on Monday (2 PM CST) after beating UConn 12-2, Northeastern 7-4, and Grand Canyon 9-1.
Nebraska spring football kicks off Saturday
It’s hard to believe, but the Huskers will be back at it this week, as spring practice starts on Saturday. There will be position battles to watch at quarterback, running back, and on the offensive line, plus just about everywhere on defense, even wide receiver and tight end.
Competition should be the theme of this spring for the Huskers, who have a new quarterback in Anthony Colandrea, along with two new coordinators (Rob Aurich and Brett Maher), a new O-line coach (Geep Wade), a new D-line coach (Corey Brown), and a run-game coordinator for the first time under Rhule (Lonnie Teasley).
There will be plenty to learn in the next month or so, which might be the biggest storyline, along with all the changes.
