Huskers news: Nebraska projected to land transfer LB, another test for hoops

The Huskers have another test in men’s basketball, plus Nebraska football is making moves in the transfer portal.

The Huskers have been busy in the transfer portal, and on Sunday, Nebraska football finally got something to show for it, landing the commitment of four-star QB Kenny Minchey.

The former Notre Dame quarterback is ranked among the top 10 transfer portal quarterbacks by Rivals and 247 Sports. He’s a consensus top-45 prospect in the transfer portal, too.

It is a gamble, simply because Minchey hasn’t played, but it was a risk the Huskers had to take.

Now, that Nebraska football has a quarterback, it can shift its attention to other positions. One that might be getting a reinforcement soon, is linebacker. Owen Chambliss, who had 109 tackles and four sacks for San Diego State last season, has been projected by numerous experts at On3 and 247 Sports to land with the Huskers.

Chambliss is 6-foot-3, 230 pounds. He’s ranked as the No. 12 linebacker in the portal, and with his pass-rush ability, would be a key piece for new defensive coordinator Rob Aurich. He has two years left to play, too.  The Huskers have been busy in the portal, and for all the latest, including departures, visitors, and more, check out our running tracker.

Huskers face road test against Ohio State

The Nebraska basketball team should move into the top 10 today in the latest AP Poll after a win over Michigan State that improved the Huskers record to 14-0. They are 3-0 in the Big Ten and own the nation’s longest winning streak at 18 games.

Ohio State, tonight’s opponent (5:30 CST, FS1) is 10-3. The Buckeyes are 2-1 in the Big Ten and ranked 39th, according to the Kenpom rankings. Nebraska is 23rd. The Huskers also boast the No. 18 adjusted defense. Ohio State, led by dynamic scorer Bruce Thorton, has the No. 23 adjusted offense.

Thorton is scoring 20.9 ppg. He’s shooting 58.6 percent from the field, 45.2 percent from 3-point range, and 67 percent on 2s. He’s also averaging 5.2 rebounds and four assists.

Thorton should get a healthy dose of Sam Hoiberg tonight. Defense will be the key. Ohio State is an elite 2-point shooting team (62.2, 13th nationally). Nebraska is one of the best teams at limiting those attempts. Teams are allowed just 29.5 2-pointers per game (11th-best nationally), and the Huskers are allowing teams to shoot just 45.3 percent (29th nationally).

Michigan State, for instance, shot just 31 percent on 2-pointers on Friday night. That’s why Nebraska won the game. The Huskers should have the edge on the glass, too.

Knocking down 3-pointers will be critical for Nebraska, as always.

Prediction: The Huskers are a 2.5-point underdog. Yet, Rienk Mast is an All-Big Ten performer. He will continue to play well, and the Nebraska defense will frustrate Ohio State enough to get a road win in Columbus.

Nebraska 75, Ohio State 70.

Huskers bounce back in women’s basketball

After losing to USC 74-66 on Monday and Iowa on Thursday, in another ranked matchup, 86-76, Nebraska women’s basketball needed a bounce-back win, and got it with a 78-62 triumph over Purdue on Sunday.

Britt Price scored 17 points and made four triples. The Huskers are now 13-2 overall. They are 2-2 in the Big Ten.
