Former Nebraska football quarterback Adrian Martinez might have been playing for a job on Saturday night, getting the start for the New York Jets in the preseason finale against the New York Giants.

The Jets wound up winning the game. New York scored 10 points and Martinez led both of the Jets’ scoring drives which included a first-quarter field goal, as well as a touchdown in the second.

As far as the former Nebraska football QB was concerned, it was a so-so night. It’s hard playing quarterback with a bunch of guys who won’t be on the final roster and that was the task for Martinez. He completed 12-of-20 passes for 90 yards, which is a paltry 4.5 yards per attempt.

Martinez didn’t have any turnovers. He did run the ball three times for 23 yards. In the first preseason game, Martinez was impressive and looked to be creating some buzz. Yet, the former Husker had an interception last week, but it still seems like he may have done enough to earn a spot on the practice squad.

Will Adrian Martinez make an NFL practice squad?

The Jets and the rest of the NFL have to cut their roster down to 53 players by August 27th. However, players can still be added to the practice squad and that’s probably the best-case scenario for Martinez, who won the UFL MVP award during the spring.

In all, Martinez went 25-of-47 in the preseason for 270 yards. He averaged 5.7 yards per attempt and completed 53 percent of his passes. Those numbers aren’t great but his athleticism could get him a shot to develop on the practice squad for a year.

Another former Nebraska football player in danger of being cut is Samore Toure. The one-time receiver for Martinez caught two passes for 28 yards for the Packers on Saturday but due to the depth Green Bay has at wideout, Toure could be searching for a new home this week.
