Iowa kicker calls Nebraska football QB Dylan Raiola ‘Mahomes Jr.’

To the victors go the spoils, I guess. After a 13-10 win over Nebraska football, Iowa of course was talking smack about Huskers quarterback Dylan Raiola.

At least Iowa kicker Drew Stevens was.

I understand that Stevens just hit a game-winning field goal for Iowa to beat Nebraska 13-10, but the Hawkeyes shouldn’t be that cocky. They just were gifted one of the luckiest wins in the history of the sport.

Sure the play to knock the ball out of Dylan Raiola’s hands at the end was a good play, but Raiola did look like he might have been down with the ball (recovering the fumble). Replay said the play was confirmed, but after the officials changed their call on the field from down by contact to a fumble.

It probably deserved a closer look. The refs also missed a delay of game penalty before Stevens’ field goal attempt that should have pushed it back five yards. Outside of that, all Iowa needed after 164 yards total were two Nebraska fumbles to gift them six points.

Iowa didn’t get a first down after either turnover. Kaleb Johnson made a great play and the Iowa defense stood firm but it’s a bit rich for Stevens, a kicker, to call Raiola “Mahomes Jr.”

I hope that Raiola sees that. He is just a freshman and while he shouldn’t need any more motivation to torch Iowa next year, he’s got some.

Those comments also might offer some insight into why Nebraska didn’t shake the hands of Iowa captains before the game. Rhule clearly doesn’t like Iowa and comments like that serve as a reminder that pride comes before the fall.
