Husker Big Red Daily: Nebraska is trending for a 5-star commitment, Nebraska football DC’s epic quote

Nebraska football is the focus right now, but Fred Hoiberg is expected to land a major commitment in the 2027 recruiting class: Dawson Battie. 

The 6-foot-8, 215-pound power forward has been a top target of the Huskers for months — even years, actually. Out of Dallas, Texas, Battie is ranked 27th overall in the 2027 class, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings.

That Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine gives the Huskers a 96 percent chance to land his commitment. Battie will be on campus for the Nebraska football game against North Dakota, so this is the perfect chance to close.

Battie is ranked as a five-star, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. Battie is a solid low-post scorer. He is an above-average athlete and shoots 30 percent from 3-point range, as well as 71 percent from the free-throw line, a percentage that should improve.

The nephew of NBA player Tony Battie has been offered by Kansas, Kentucky, Auburn, Stanford, Virginia, Missouri, LSU, Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, and Maryland, among others.

This would be a big-time get. We will see if Nebraska can close.

Rob Aurich gives an epic quote

The Nebraska defensive coordinator will be tested this week by a North Dakota offense averaging 540 yards and 50.3 points per game.

Jerry Kaminsky has thrown 11 touchdown passes through three games. North Dakota has scored 42 points in all three games this season.

I wouldn’t expect Nebraska to overlook this offense. Aurich knows how good FCS football can be. He also said on the Husker Radio Network on Thursday that while he respects the opponents, he is focused more on what his defense is doing.

“As much as I got respect for the people on the other sideline, I’ve never had a game where it was about the opponent. It’s about us and how we execute our stuff. For us and our team, we certainly respect who they are. But respect all, fear none,” Aurich said.

Husker fans roll up a $14k tab during Jon Rothstein ‘Happy Hour’

CBS college basketball analyst Jon Rothstein promised that he would put on a happy hour for Nebraska basketball fans if they won thei first NCAA Tournament game last March. That happened, as they advanced to the Sweet 16.

Rothstein paid the tab on Wednesday and it ended up being $14,458. Fred Hoiberg said, “I don’t think Rothstein had any idea, when he made the bet, what he was getting into.”

Maybe next year, we will be celebrating a Final Four berth.
