Husker Big Red Daily: A Mekhi Nelson update, and a notable Nebraska football position change

Nebraska football fans will hear from head coach Matt Rhule today at Big Ten Media Days in Chicago.

Joining Rhule in Chicago for Big Ten Media Days will be Andrew Marshall, Luke Lindenmeyer, and Justin Evans. The Huskers have won seven games in back-to-back seasons, but the hope is to improve on that this season.

The schedule is very difficult. So, we’ll see what Rhule has to say. I laid out some things I don’t want to hear from Rhule on Thursday. One thing we should hear about, though, is Nebraska football running back Mekhi Nelson.

Nelson was arrested this offseason. However, the charges were dropped. Nebraska athletic director Troy Dannen said that the athletic department wouldn’t be punishing Nelson. Rhule could still suspend the running back, who has been suspended before.

Yet, there’s a good chance that Nelson could be the starting running back. In terms of talent, he’s probably the best back on the roster. The issue has been off the field stuff. Will Rhule confirm his status? The roster was updated, and Nelson is on it.

Notable roster change for Nebraska football

The Huskers updated their football roster on Wednesday. There were some weight changes and things like that; however, the biggest update was a position change. Four-star Jeremiah Jones, an WR/OLB in high school, has shifted from wide receiver to defensive line. He’s not going to be an interior player. He is an EDGE.

Jones is listed at 6-foot-4, 230 pounds. He wanted to play wide receiver, but had just one reception for six yards last season. The depth chart is stacked at wideout, too. There is an opening at EDGE, especially since the Huskers haven’t exactly lined up blue-chip commitments at the position.

It will be interesting to see if Jones can find a way into the rotation this season, because if not, you wonder how things are going to work out moving forward. The kid is a tremendous athlete. Hopefully, this move helps him realize his potential.
